English for all

A myth is a story explaining  why people and animals are the way they are ,or how a natural event or phenomena happens eg. How  darkness came into the world;  How the giraffe got his long neck. Listen to the myth: 'Why is the sea salty?'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnJTzICdzQs

When you are listening to it  think about:

  • Setting
  • Characters
  • Plot ( what happens )
  • how the salt got into the sea

A storyboard can be used to help you explain what is going to happen in a  story.  You can tell the story by drawing  pictures and sentences of the key events.Thought or speech bubbles can also be used.

Year 2: This will take 2 days  to create a neat and  beautifully presented storyboard of the myth’ Why is the sea salty’

Task 1 :Jot down and plan what happens in the story before you start your storyboard. Who are the characters? Where is it set? Think about the key events in the story. How does the salt get into the sea?

Include in your myth  a simile, adverbials ( suddenly, quickly, carefully), strong adjectives and verbs.

Year 3: This will take 2 days  to create a neat  and  beautifully presented storyboard . You will write your own myth  telling the story  ‘Why is the sea salty’

Task 1: Plan your own myth of ‘Why is the sea salty?’

Things to think about:

  • characters
  • setting
  • key events ( what happens )
  • explain how the salt gets into the sea

Task 2 : Create a story board of your own  story to show the key events. Remember to add narrative to each picture (tell the story) to describe what is happening. Add speech or thought bubbles in each picture..

Include in your myth fronted adverbials, a simile, adverbials( suddenly, quickly, carefully), strong adjectives and verbs.

An example of a story board template is attached. You may choose to draw your own using a ruler. It must have at least 8 boxes but you may use more if you wish.

Don’t forget to post your finished storyboards  on dojo.

Today there is an experiment to try linked to the topic this week.

Salt water experiment.

Before you watch the video clip mix a teaspoon of salt into 50ml (approx) of water and stir. What do you notice happens to the salt?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjty4wx/articles/zpbdpbk

Pour the salt water mixture into a shallow dish (e.g. a shallow bowl/plate/saucer) and leave on a sunny windowsill. What do you notice?

After a few days, record what you noticed. Can you explain in pictures and words what has happened to the salt and water using scientific vocabulary?

Now watch this video clip as well about evaporation and condensation
