Castle Acre Primary School

Scott Polar Institute visit 16.11.18

To support our 'Frozen World' topic, Oak class travelled to Cambridge to spend the morning exploring the Scott Polar Institute.

The coach kindly dropped us outside the museum and immediately we noticed the statues and exhibits to the front and side. A replica of the lifeboat Shackleton and some of his crew rowed in order to make their escape from Elephant Island and the life size husky sculpture were of particular interest.

Once inside, we spent time looking, drawing and taking notes. Exhibits included Polar Medals, artwork and photographs of expeditions to Antarctica, letters home, clothing, skis and sledges, a kayak made from driftwood and covered with stretched animal skin, weapons such as harpoons and spears and a Parka jacket made from the intestines of seals.

Before we left, the children spent time buying souvenirs of their visit.
