Thrusday 11th June 2020

Welcome to Thursday's learning tasks...

Spellings:

Rule 23: ‘cial’ or ‘tial’ suffixes

Continue to practice spelling words containing the ‘cial’ or ‘tial’ suffixes. You can refer to slide 6 of the powerpoint for ideas of  words containing these suffixes,

Read for pleasure: Spend 10-15 minutes (or more if you want) reading something for pleasure. It could be a story, poem, play, information text, comic, graphic novel or online text/kindle/e-reader. You could also read to a younger or older sibling.

English: Story writing: Writing your dilemma

Today you will be writing your dilemma (not the rest of your story!). This is possibly the most difficult part of the story to write, because you need to try to get the reader to picture in their head everything that is happening, and you want them to empathise with your main character. It also should be quite exciting, so the description you use needs to be thought about carefully. I will upload a short video to dojo to explain what I expect to be included in this section of your story, but you will need to:

  • Write in the past tense (you must keep this consistent)
  • Write in the third person
  • Organise your writing into paragraphs
  • Vary the start of your sentences (e.g. fronted adverbials, use ISPACE and fronted adverbials word mats below to help you)
  • Use some subordinating conjunctions
  • Use some semi-colons to link clauses
  • Use description to add interest to the reader (e.g. similes, metaphors, expanded noun phrases…describe what your character can see, hear, feel, smell or even taste). Be adventurous with your vocabulary!

Don't forget, you can refer to the fronted adverbials word mat and the ISPACE promt to help you.

Art: Illustration

Today, I would like you to produce a piece of art work to illustrate part of your story. You can use any style of your choosing (e.g. Picasso/Dali/Lichtenstein inspired or your own…) and can choose any medium you like (paint, pens, pastilles/collage…..), but it does need to be colourful. I can’t wait to see your masterpieces!
